Instructor Mental Health Working Group – Sep 15th

The purpose of the event is to build a coalition of Colorado Firearms Instructors to work together to begin to build a useful approach to introducing mental health information and resources into Colorado Concealed Carry classes.  The goal of this new program is to provide a solid foundation of content that instructors can draw from in order to provide high quality information to students.

As you know, the new requirements for a valid concealed carry training class include a component for covering ERPO’s.  While Guns For Everyone National objects to not only ERPO’s but also the government dictating training requirements, the reality that the requirement exists creates a challenge for instructors.

The challenge is, how do we responsibly approach the topic of mental health and firearms in the classroom in ways that are useful for the students to prevent negative outcomes with firearms?

Guns For Everyone National is seeking to include Colorado Firearms Instructors in building an accessible and robust resource to meet this new challenge.

The first meeting will be an introduction to the goals of the effort and will include local and national leaders in the issues of managing mental health and firearms. We will also be gathering feedback from instructors about challenges and strategies with this element of the classroom/training experience.

Our primary coordinating mental health resource will be Kirsten Wulfsberg.

Kirsten Wulfsberg is a licensed professional counselor, who spent 20 years working in psychiatric crisis management within a hospital/emergency department setting.  Kirsten is passionate about behavioral health education, training and working with people in a preventative manner, and believes feeling engaged in your community is a key component of that.
